Hmmm policewoman, firewomen, washerwoman, etc, etc, etc. common use age creates constant change in any language hence why dictionaries need a constant update. People have chosen to differentiate born women from those who are transgender. It is not surprising that they rely on abbreviations from constant usage. Such are the dynamics of an active language.
